Rowing FUND OPENED FOR HILL

Rogers) to enlist his aid in raising about £6OO to enable the New Zealand sculling champion, J. R. Hill, of Hamilton, to compete in the world rowing championship at Lucerne. Switzerland. next month. Hill, who has been champion of New Zealand for several years and who ranked as fourth best in the world after the Olympic Games of 1960. received an invitation to the championship race about a fortnight ago. Mr D. D. Rowlands, a former champion, will approach Dr. Rogers on behalf of the Auckland Provincial Rowing Association. He said tonight: "In our eyes as oarsmen. Hill is practically Hamilton’s Peter Snell and for that reason we are all hopeful that the money will be found to get him away." The race for the championship is on September 9. The International Federation is prepared to lend Hill a suitable boat. Hill has been in constant training for the best part of two years and on receipt of the international invitation found no difficulty- in accelerating his work to fit him for the race.
