LECTURES ON HISTORY

W.E.A. And Museum Project Ten weekly lectures dealing with work in progress on Canterbury and New Zealand history have been organised by the Workers’ Educational Association in conjunction with the Canterbury Museum. The fi-st lecture will be given on August 2. “The main purpose cf the series is not to cover old ground but rather to examine critically existing ideas in school text-books and to suggest new and profitable lines for research." said Mr G. M. Miller, cf the economies department of the University of Canterbury, who will be one of the lecturers. The lectures will include two on land, two on Christchurch. and one on railways between 1830 and 1879. Others will deal with two political leaders. William Rollestcn and Sir John Hail, the whaling and pastoral industries, squatting and squatters, and the political differences between Canterbury and the West Coast. Most ot the lecturers are engaged cn research on Canterbury with relevance to the whole of New Zealand. Other lecturers from the University of Canterbury will be Mr P. May and Mr W. J Gardiner, of the history department. Other lecturers will be the Rev. W. Pierre, who is engaged on a history of Canterbury railways. Mr J. C. Wilson, museum archivist. Dr. H. Scatter, who is engaged on the third volume of the centennial history of Canterbury. Mr J. Sherrard, of the Christchurch Technical College, Mr G. R. Macdonald, compiler of the museum biographical index, and Mr J. H. Johnstc-n. the museum educational officer.
