BOYS LEFT HOME

Wanted To Ride Horses (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Aug. 1. Ninety-two hours after they left home on bicycles on Saturday night, two Gisborne brothers were found safe and sound this afternoon in a woolshed on Waipura station, McLaurin’s road, about nine miles from Gisborne. They gave as their reason for leaving home: “They wouldn't let us ride horses.” The boys, Owen Martin, aged 15, and Max Martin, aged 13, who left home at 7.15 p.m. on Saturday wearing jeans and shorts, were discovered reading magazines in the woolshed about 3 p.m. today by a shepherd Their disappearance began a four-day volunteer and police search. According to the boys they began their adventure with 21s, with which they purchased canned foods. They rode straight to a stable on the station where they lay up. They remained in this refuge until today when they moved to the woolshed. The boys, dishevelled, dirty, and hungry but in good spirits, said they had not felt the cold. They were barefoot and carried their shoes. The elder boy had cut a foot, not severely, and was taken to the hospital for treatment before the pair were returned home.
