Mayor Commends Work Of Saving Children

Although the Save the Children Fund in North Canterbury has an annual income of more than £13,300, less than £2OO w as devoted to organisation and administration costs during the last vear.

Announcing this at the annual meeting of the branch yesterday, the Mayor, Mr G. Manning, praised the intensive and widespread voluntary effort which had contributed "so magnificently” to the fund s work.

Throughout Christchurch and North Canterbury large numbers of organisations, firms and individual children and adults were helping to keep alive the objects of the fund through their voluntary support, he said.

Those present included the Mayoress (Mrs Manning >. the nswly -appointed New Zealand nurse for Korea ■ Mis E. Laloli), representatives at supporting women’s organisations, persons sponsoring children through the fund, and members of the fund. There were also several groups of children from primary and secondary schools who sponsor children under the fund’s scheme.

Appealing to all citizens in “this happy and free from ■hunger country” to give their support to toe fund, the president i Miss M. G. Havelaart presented the branch’s fifteenth annual report. ‘‘Join us now and give the generations to come a chance of a happier, fuller life,” she said. Speaking to the report. Mi Manning praised Miss Havelaar'a work for the organisat.on. “She is what I could term the factotum of our branch. ’• he said. It was voluntary effort such as this which formed the real basis of progress and social development in any community, he said. He was convinced that the real springs of progress were based on individual, volun-

tary help. Everywhere this could be seen as the real driving force behmd development. In the Save the Children Fund voluntary effort was based on members’ response to the cry of the child in need as was abroad. The very basis of human society was the relationship between the mother and child, he said, and supporters of the fund were those who could feel the intensity of this relationship, and understand the obstacles hindering its natural development in other parts of the world.
