VACANT POST AT LINCOLN
“World Shortage Of Scientists”
A senior lecturer in plant genetics is urgently required by Lincoln College. There was a world shortage of scientists in this field, and a considerable volume of correspondence with almost every major centre in New Zealand had failed to draw suitable applicants, said the principal of the college (Dr. M M. Burns) at a meeting of the college council. The professorial board will consider a recommendation by Dr Burns that the position be graded up to a readership, with applications, in future advertising to be called over the salary range for a lecturer, senior lecturer, and reader.
Approval has been given for the establishment of a special research unit in agricultural economics at the college. This had been indicated by a grant of £12.000 to the college from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, said Dr Burns. The research unit will be headed by Professor B P Philpott. Sketch plans for the building of a new block of lecture rooms at the college are being considered by the Ministry of Works. The lay-out of the lecture rooms had not been decided yet, and alternative designs were still being discussed. Dr Burns said. Detailed sketch plans were being prepared for laboratories and staff rooms. A special short course on general farming, which began on July 2. drew 43 enrolments —more than half of these being employees of mercantile firms. Dr. Burns said. A better response had been expected from the local farming community If the course had been residential, many more applications would have been received, he said, but this had not been practicable at the time The course will last a fortnight
