(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)
SYDNEY. July 11. England’s Rugby League players have been instructed to play closely to the rules in Saturday’s third test against Australia at Sydney. The tourists' manager. Mr Stuart Hadfield, said today he had given the players a firm instruction not to infringe rules. The English camp has the idea that Australian referees are against them, and penalise them unduly. Mr Hadfield claimed that Australian teams in England receive better treatment from referees than his team has had this year. Mr Hadfield has warned his team particularly against offside play, putting the ball in the scrum incorrectly, and back-chatting the referee. "My players will not be breaking any rules, and we shall expect the referee to demand the same of Australia,’’ he said. Mr Hadfield complained that, although his pack was heavier and had a better hooker, frequently It was beaten for the ball when the local halves were feeding the scrum. He also complained that penalties were given home teams in kicking positions, but England’s penalties were often awarded In difficult spots.
