Sportsman’s Notebook Interest High In Reserve Tourney

Much of the interest has gone out of the senior Rugby competition as University, with four rounds to go, is four points ahead of the next team, Christchurch. However, the D.CJu. Shield competition is in a more interesting position. Sydenham has six points, only one point ahead of Marist Merivale, and Suburbs. There is much less prestige attached to the lower half of tile senior competition, but at least the closeness of the first four contestants will provide some life to a competition which has lacked appeal for some time. There is more interest than usual in the senior reserve competition where Lincoln College, playing in the town grade for the first time, is trying desperately to win to enable it to challenge the bottom team in the D.C.L. competition, which is almost certain to be Belfast. Should Lincoln College win its competition and then beat Belfast it will automatically be entitled to play in the senior grade next year. At present, Marist, with 104 points, leads the senior reserve Rugby competition by one point from Lincoln. Marist, however, has not yet had the bye. Christchurch and Linwood are equal third with eight points. The only two other teams with more than six points are Air Force (7) and Varsity A GJ). The latter team has still to have the bye. In the second round of this grade there will be five playing Saturdays and the top teams will be drawn against each other. ¥ ¥ ¥ Hockev Fixtures

Under 14: Canterbury v. South Canterbury, date to be arranged. Canterbury Primary Schools (A, C. D, and E) v. Ashburton and the West Coast, at Barrington Park, July 28. ¥ ¥ ¥ Closing Dates At the conclusion of the second round, teams in the Canterbury Hockey Association's senior grade will divide into the top four and the bottom four. The final round of three games will be played on August 4, 11, and 25. There will be no senior matches on August 18. Senior reserve, third, and fifth grades all end on September 1. Second grade A ends on August 25, and sec-

ond grade B, fourth, and sixth grades, and all under age games end on Auguat 13. * ¥ ♦ Incorrect Dress The Canterbury Men’s Basketball Association has issued circulars to all cluba, stressing the need for correct dress while players are on the court. In spite of several requests from the association, the colour, condition, and regularity of some clubs’ uniforms is stiU far from satisfactory. It wae decided at a recent meeting of the management committee that Mr M. A. McDougall would have the power to order any player from the court if that player was incorrectly dressed. If this happens, and a team has less than five players to take the court, the game shall be defaulted. ¥ * ♦ Julian In Training New Zealand’s second best marathon runner, J. L. Julian, covered the staggering distance of 255 miles in one week recently, while training for the 26 miles, 385 yards event at Perth in November. Julian’s effort is against the principles laid down by Mr A. L. Lydiard. Lydiard feels that it is unnecessary for any man to run more than 100 miles a week. Julian ran 700 miles in three weeks, and a total of 2000 miles in a 10-week “build-up" session. He intends to keep on with this schedule.
