Farm-Machinery Procession As Prelude. To Show

As a forerunner of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's centennial show in November. Inch will take p'ace over f ur days this year instead of the usual three, the ass-j--c.ation will hold a cavalcade through the city of veteran nd modern farm machinery, horse-drawn and old motorvehicles, and a bullock cart v, .th a team of bullocks. The procession will be held on Monday. November 5. and • ie show will open the next day. People's day will . ;a;n be the Friday. A representative collection of old •arm machinery will be in a static display in the grounds r ear the Lincoln road entrance, and o her veteran mobile relics will be accommodated near the ring and will be paraded around the r ng during the show. Other examples of old machinery w .11 probably be included on many of the machinery firms’ display stands. In reseponse to personal

approaches and an appeal which was made in ‘The Frets ' recently, many persons have written to or telephoned the association about old equipment which they are prepared to lend. Some of this machinery is in excellent order, and some of the old horse vehicles, including a brougham, were paraded at the Canterbury centennial show in 1950.

At yesterday's meeting of the association the chairman of the implement committee >Mr W. R. Oliver) reported that many persons and firms had offered to lend equipment and the civic authorities had offered full cooperation with the procession.

The secretary (Mr H. Studholme) said the interest shown in the project would ensure a really good display. There would also be some of the old equipment in Canterbury Court. For the first time in the South Island a display motorcycle drill will be given at the show by the New Zealand Army.

Sideshow Appliances The inspection of sideshow appliances, “after assembly and before use by the public,” by a qualified mechanical engineer was stipulated in a letter from the City Council. This was required before a licence could be granted for the use of the grounds, the letter said. Further information as to requirements and parties responsible will be sought from the council.

The Marine Department, which was responsible for the testing of machinery, would not undertake to do this work, and if the inspection had to be organised by the association it would be a considerable inconvenience because, as many of the installations would be erected just before the show, the examination would have to be carried out early on the morning of the first day, said Mr Stud holme.

Preparations for the show were going forward reasonably well and there was widespread interest in all sections, he said.
