PAINTING AND DECORATING

Publication Of Code

Representatives of 14 organisations concerned with paint and painting compiled the New Zealand Standard Code of Practice for Painting, which has been published by the New Zealand Standards Institute.

The code tells of painting techniques—brush application, graining, stippling, spray 'applications, and sequence of painting. There is a guide to paint types which lists 40 types of paint and the various surfaces to which they may be applied. One chapter describes the effects of climate, the correct way to stop and fill, and how to apply undercoats and finish coats. It also describes typical defects and causes of paint failure. Chapters are devoted to the painting of woodwork, wallboard and ceiling board, plaster, concrete, brick and stone, portland cement concrete, brickwork, stone masonry, non-ferrous metals, and iron and steel.

Supplements will be issued from time to time to keep Up with latest techniques and developments, and the first one, covering exterior highgloss enamels, has just been printed. Copies of the code are available from offices of the Government Printing and Stationery Department or from the New Zealand Standards Institute, Wellington.
