New Guinea Reports

Modern Russian-built MIG jet fighters have been seen in the area of West New Guinea. Dutch authorities in Hollandia revealed today, but they gave no details. The British United Press said latest estimates showed 1200 Indonesian guerrillas had been air dropped into Nev/ Guinea since January 1. About 600 had either been killed or taken prisoner. In Djakarta, President Soekamo said today that whether there was negotiation with the Dutch or not. the “liberation” of West New Guinea had to go forward. He said: “I have received a note from the United Nations Secretary-General. U Thant, on the West Irian issue. Indonesia will decide in the shortest possible time whether or not it is necessary to resume the talks with the Dutch. “In the meantime, the Indonesian police in particular, and the people in general, should go forward with the command to 'liberate’ the territory.”
