Buller By-Election
Sir.—Let me assure Mr Tom Bryce that I am a swinging voter and do not believe in party voting, no matter what its label. Many a time have I voted for the late Teddy Howard as I was born and bred in Sydenham. I do not think Mr Nordmeyer is a martyr but I do think he is an honest, able politician whom the Labour Party can ill afford to lose, and who was on the right- track when he imposed taxes on luxuries such as tobacco, drink, rtc, but it was the uxurker who let the Labour Party down last election. Who else? Incidentally. the goings-on in the Federation of Labour at the present time could hardly be called the actions of "mates.” —Yours, etc. INTERESTED June 22. 1982.
Sir,—ln the last few years we have repeatedly heard the "clarion call" of Government leaders: "We have great faith in the people of this country and its resources.” The leg-pulling days are over and the "old grey mare” has been flogged far enough. Today our coal and timber industries are on the wane; tomorrow our primary industries could be halved. We have terrific ‘“over-vaJuatton” of land and homes. A farm which I sold eight years ago on which I had a 3] per cent mortgage would now cost me three times as much to buy back, and the mortgage would be at per cent This fair country is a moneylenders’ paradise; in fact they own it. —Yours, etc. HIGHWAYMAN.
