Golf CHARLES HAS POOR ROUND
£3850 Game At Leeds (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LEEDS, June 21. Bob Charles, of New Zealand, had a poor 80 in the first round of the £3850 “Yorkshire Evening News” 72-hole tournament today. He hit the boundary wall with his drive at the ninth and it rebounded on to the fairway. He then cut his second out of bounds to give him seven for the hole. Michael Busk, also of New Zealand, hit a 35-40 first-round 75, seven behind the leader, the South African Stewart *DavieS, who set a hot pace with a 3-under-par 68. Peter Thomson, favourite to win the event for the third successive year, hit a 6-over-par 77. Thomson was one of many players caught in a “traffic jam” on the outward nine caused by the big field of 200.
