Table Tennis CANTERBURY TITLES
No Upsets In Early Rounds There were no surprises when the early rounds of the Canterbury open table tennis championships were played in the Selwyn Street Hall last evening. The prominent entrants from outside Christchurch were not required to be present for last evening’s [Hay, so only a few matches were held. The title-holder, J. Armstrong, was the only seeded player to have a singles match, and his encounter with R. B McCallum gave the spectators a great deal of interest. Armstrong. who was not hitting his shots with confidence, struggled to beat McCallum in four games, and there was little between a win and a loss for the top-seeded player. McCallum, whose form this season has not been good, played steady, and let Armstrong normally a model of consistency, make the errors McCallum built up handy leads in two of the games which he lost—he led 10-5 in the first game and 13-8 in the fourth Both of these he lost through trying shots which were more spectacular than effective
An A grade reserve player. P. J. Wylie (Dallington) won a long match with the experienced A grade player, N. C Orr.
