REPERTORY PLAY

6 JF7ien Knights Were 80ld 9

To enliven the winter season. members of the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society are presenting their version of the evergreen farce. “When Knights Were Bold.” at the Civic Theatre 'his week "When Knights Were Bold” is an, additional production, outside the ordinary annual programme of the society' and the aim of those taking part is to raise money for improvements to the Repertory Theatre in Kilmore street. As might be expected. "When Knights Were Bold” is very light entertainment indeed; but. nevertheless, there are several themes to be worked out in the three acts, although not all of 'hese are confidently handled by the cast. In the nature of things. Sir Guy de Vere has the lion’s share of the comic business and the comic lines, and he does tend to outshine everyone else, in consequence. The producer is fortunate in having Tom Kincaid to play Sir Guy. Mr Kincaid is a veteran at this kind of thing, as those who saw "Charley’s Aunt” last year will remember. This time, however, he has practically the whole play on his shoulders. and his success is remarkable. In a cheerful, spirited performance, he appears never for a moment to be at a loss for the appropriate word or gesture, at the same time establishing a pleasant relationship with other members of the cast and with the audience. His conduct of the last act—at break-neck speed—is particularly appealing. Another agreeable character part is that played by Laurence Hayston, who is the rural dean in this play. It is rather a surprise to find John Hendry as a Jewish financier, both mediaeval and modern. He has very good support from Evelyn Abbott as Miss Sarah Isaacson. Janet Corte is Lady Rowena, and Alan Shaw is the boastful descendant of Brian Boru, Sir Bryan Ballymote. “When Knights Were Bold” is produced by Heath Joyce, who also planned the attractive setting. ’ —C.E.S
