CYCLING R. Fowler Wins Amanda Wilkes Trophy Race

R. Fowler (Avon) showed a return to his old form on Saturday when he won the Amanda Wilkes trophy race conducted by the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club Fowler had no racing during the track season and so far this road season had not shown up very prominently, but on Saturday he rode a good race and his win was well-deserved. Conditions were excellent for the race, which was run from Woodend to about three miles past Motunau and return. On the outward run just past Leithfield the riders met a slight head wind and the upward grade slowed them uo. The short sharp hills after Waipara caused many of the riders to fall back. On the homeward run the downhill grade and a slight following wind to Amberley made the pace of the scratch men much faster than on the outward run. The scratch men took Ihr 36min 45sec to reach the turn, but they covered the return journey Smin 48sec faster. J. Mobbs (Avon) was the first man to reach the turn, having ridden away from his co-markers off the limit mark, but he had only half a minute lead on riders from the 27-minute mark. The next two to reach the turn were G McGregor and M. Ritchie, both of Christchurch, who had been dropped from the limit and 20min marks respectively. At the finish, the scratch men had picked up mmin of their handicap on break.

Between Waipara and Amberley, the scratch men were only I'ymin behind the leaders. The leading bunch then consisted of three riders from the break mark, two from the 12min mark and B Mugford (Avon), off 2“m;n. Mugford did'not stav with the bunch very much longer, but the other five remained together to the finish. About a mile from the finish the scratch men were only 100 yards behind the leaders.

Nearing the line, the leaders pockeyed for positions for the final sprint Fowler led out with R Bush

'Papanui) on one side and H. Bush (Papar.ui) on the other, but Fowler had too much in reserve and held off a strong challenge by these two to take the decision by a length. Nearing the finish. G. Milner, a scratch man, had fallen back a little and it became a sprint for fastest time between K. Jeffery and B Berry, both of Christchurch. with Jeffery taking time by the narrowest of margins.
