Suedes Beat Czechs (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. June 17. Sweden, zone finalists last year, gained a winning 3-0 lead over Czechoslovakia in their Davis Cup European zone quarter-final tie in Stockholm yesterday. They made certain of a semi-final place when they won the doubles. J. Lundquist and U. Schmidt, who won their two singles on Friday without conceding a set, won in straight sets yesterday 8-6, 6- 6-0. against J. Javorsky and P. Strobl. Sweden's semi-final opponents will be the winners of the Germany-South Africa tie, which is being played in Berlin. Germany are 2-0 up after the first two singles. I. Buding beat C. Drysdale 4-6, 7- 6-4, 9-11, 6-3, in a match interrupted by a thunderstorm on Friday night, and W. Bungert beat G. Forbes. 6-3, 6-8, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Italy, the zone champions, took a 2-1 lead over Hungary in Brescia, north Italy, winning the doubles yesterday after surprisingly dropping one of the singles on Friday. N. Pietrangeli and O. Sirola had a tough fight against I. Gulyas and A. Szikszai before winning through 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. 4-6, 6-3. The final two singles will be played today and the winners wil] meet Britain in the semi-finals. j Britain completed a 4-1 victory over Brazil at East- : bourne, Sussex, winning the final two singles yesterday. |W. Knight beat C. Farnandes, ilO-8, 6-3. 3-6, 7-5, and M. I.Sangster beat J. Mandarino, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
