Lampada Has Easy Te Awamutu Win

‘•The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, June 17.

Had Lampada been elsewhere. there would have been an exciting race in the Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamutu yesterday. Lampada proved too good, having everything his own way in the last furlong, but the next seven arrived in such a tight pack that until right on the post it seemed the rest of the money could go anywhere.

Uppercut collected the £l5O for second by a neck from Red Luca (third) and Simca. after pulling hard, came forth. Craddock. Black Lad, Sinecure and Captain Lancaster made up the bunch.

Lampada’s winning margin was three lengths. Had his rider, J. P. Riordan, allowed it, it would have been considerably more. After making certain there was no danger of being overtaken, Riordan steadied his mount. For the last 50 yards he was going with a great deal 1 in hand.

A rugged eight-year-old gelding by Duccio from Conatus, Lampada was a local candidate in yesterday’s big race. He is owned by Mr W. S. Macky, a vicepresident of the Waipa Racing Club and trained on the Te Awamutu course by A. Cook. The third favourite each way, he paid £6 10s for a win and £2 13s for a place.

Simca, one of his stablemates, was 2/1 in the win and place betting. The popular fancy was Craddock (1/2). Uppercut (6/5) paid £3 3s fid for second and Red Luca, the rank outsider except for Golden Defaulter, returned his place backers £ 13 Is. The T.A.B. double, Lampada and The Answer, paid £ll7 13s for £l. The Answer’s win came in the Kihikihi Handicap after a hard battle with Young Ray. A six-year-old gelding, prepared by his owners, Messrs C. M. Dufty and T J. McDermott, at Putaruru, The Answer scored six minor placings from 13 previous attempts this season, so his success did not come out of turn. He had a neck on Young Ray in the finish and Sandamara, an outsider, came third nearly two lengths further back

Anywhere was one of the big disappointments and another was Golden Echo Both were quickly well behind. In the end neither reached the first six.

The weather was fine and sunny after a heavy frost and there was a big attendance. The on-course totalisator handled £68,947 10s (including £13.145 10s on doubles) against £69,441 10s last year. Top Liner, Simca and Captain Lancaster led the early running in the Woodstock

Stakes. With a round to go. Captain Lancaster shaded White Strand and Lampada. Simca. pulling hard. came next, then Top Liner and Balzac. There was a short gap to High Mark. Uppercut. Dashing Star and Golden Defaulter.

The pace then slackened right off. White Strand went ahead with a short lead on Captain Lancaster, Simca, Top Liner, Lampada. Dashing Star and Balzac, which were tightly packed. White Strand and Captain Lancaster continued the pacemakinj along the back. With a bit less than half a mile to go the speed west on. Approaching the straight, White Strand. Red Luca. Captain Lancaster and Craddoik led Lampada. The next moment Lampada rushed to the front. With a furlong to go he was out on his own.
