“DAWN RAID” ON RANGIORA

Aero Club Flight From Ashburton

Hand-guided missiles fell on the Rangiora airfield soon after dawn yesterday when two flights of aircraft, fully loaded, peppered the field with bags of flour in surprise bombardments.

Between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. members of the Ashburton branch of the Canterbury Aero Club carried out a surprise attack on the Rangiora branch. Three aircraft dropped the bags around the clubhouse.

Undaunted by the bombardment, Rangiora members later entertained the attackers to breakfast during which the clubhouse was again pounded from the air. Unknown to either Rangiora or Ashburton members, four aircraft from Christchurch had also made a raid.

According to the Christchurch members no casualties were suffered, but there were several direct hits on the clubhouse.
