ELLESMERE GAMES

Leeston Keeps Lead Leeston maintained its top position on the Ellesmere Rugby Sub-union’s competition ladder with a thrilling 14-9 win over New Zealand Regiment on Saturday. The game was played on a very wet and muddy field, but this did not deter either team from throwing the ball about, especially in the second half, when Leeston was making up a. nine point deficit. New Zealand Regiment dominated the first half when Leeston was playing very loose. N. Kawaha at centre was always dangerous and in the first half sliced through the Leeston backline almost at will. Regiment forwards, playing more as a unit, had the edge on the Leeston pack, and when half-time came the team held a comfortable 9-0 lead. In the second half Leeston tightened up play, and with Cochrane and Sheehan winning most of the ball from set play, the back-line started to probe Regiment’s territory. which ended with Grant diving over for the winning try five minutes from time. For Leeston tries were scored by G. Skinner and R. Grant. Grant kicked a conversion and a penalty, and A. Boon a penalty. For Regiment. P. Harding kicked a field goal. J. Jones scored a try, and T. Phillips kicked a penalty. Lincoln v. Southbridge At Lincoln Domain the home team gained its first competition points with a shock 14-8 win over Southbridge. The Southbridge forwards failed to show the fire of their previous games, with the result that Lincoln had no trouble Controlling the ball. Watkins and Smith were the best of Lincoln’s forwards, while Sloane was the steadiest back. L. Jones was the player to show up most in an uninspired Southbridge team. Irwell had the bye.
