COLLEGE GAME

St Andrew’s 14-3 Win

Scoring three tries to none. St. Andrew’s College scored a well-deserved victory, 14-3, against Christ’s College in a keenly-fought game at Christ’s College on Saturday. It was the first occasion in seven years that St. Andrew’s had beaten College. A well-drilled pack, coupled with the excellent combination of M. Maxwell and J. Walkinshaw behind the scrum, paved the way for St. Andrew's win. Both teams showed a readiness to open up play at every opportunity and many bright movements eventuated. The teams were:—

St. Andrew's College.—G. Stone; P. Sturge. P. Williams, J. Sutherland; C. Fomsworth, J. Walkinshaw; M. Maxwell; A. Smith; J. Maze, C. Ensor, J. Mara, S. Fox; M. Anderson, A. Young. G. Evans. Christ’s College.— M. Lester; H. Thompson, H. Taylor, R. Cordery; B. Lake. H. Cottrell; H. Ensor; B. Andrew’s; J. Nurse, R. Carmichael, B. Hutchinson, J. D. Davies; M. van Stavern, P. Shield. J. Patullo. St. Andrews’ heavier forwards gradually dominated the battle for possession and in the latter stages of the game won the ball with monotonous regularity, particularly from rucks. It was only solid tackling by Christ’s College which kept its line intact.

It was difficult to single out any one player in the St. Andrew’s pack, as the forwards all played well. They hunted the ball together and whenever a movement broke down there were always two or three forards on hand to continue. J. Maze was always prominent and he scored a well-deserved, try in the comer after a typically powerful run. The speedy St. Andrew’s backs made the most of their opportunities given by the forwards, and the reluctance of the Christ’s College inside backs to tackle low. They all ran hard and with plenty of determination. The most impressive were the half-back. Maxwell, and the first five-eighths, Walkinshaw.

Maxwell threw out a pass of excellent length and direction and his all-round game could not be faulted. More should be heard of him. Walkinshaw was the pivot of the attack. He was quick off the mark and showed a good eye for a gap, but spoilt much of his good work by retaining the ball too long.

In the Christ’s College pack, the captain. B. Andrews, tried hard all day but received little support. P. Shield was a useful forward in a pack which was not allowed to get on top at any stage. The Christ’s College backs showed glimpses of ability but faulty handling in midfield and a tendency to go too far after making the initial break spoilt their efforts. Cordery and Thompson were two fast wings who saw very little of the ball. The half-time score was 5-3 to St. Andrew’s. For St. Andrew’s tries were scored by Walkinshaw, Maze and Farnsworth. Williams converted one and Maxwell dropped a goal. Andrews kicked a penalty goal for Christ’s College. Mr R. W. Phizacklea was the referee.
