Buller By-Election

Sir. —The increases A. F Palmer mentions were not made in order to catch votes; they must have been necessary as increases in costs do not increase popularity It must be from the people for the people, as Governments do not p"oduce goods. Anyone with five shillings to spare can buy a ticket in the Golden Kiwi lottery, the point being, there is still money for it The wealthy have no prerogative: they pay. t'>o “Blind hvoxrisy" is a strong term When the time comes, the people will decide on the Government If it is three years in and three years out. we can take it The choice is still with the people—Yours, etc, B CONSTANT. June 15, 1962.

Sir. —Not one of the socialist propagandists. ‘'Disillusioned Nationalist,” A. F Palmer. ‘‘F.E.S.." and others, has made any attempt, as invited by me, to explain why 'f Labour's policy is high taxation to enable subsidies election bribes and other inducements to be paid. Mr Nordmeyer was not appointed the Labour Party's deputyleader. The truth of the matter is that the Socialists know that responsible citizens expect to pay their own way and reasonable rates of tax. The fact that the correspondents I have mentioned advocate subsidies means that the Socialists intend a policy of high taxation to enable them to play the “big brother” role so relished by them.— Yours, etc, FORWARD WITH NATIONAL. June 15. 1962.

Sir. —Mr A. F. Palmer complains that his State house rental has been increased 14s 6d a week. He must be well aware that these increases were made in an endeavour ‘k> make State housing selfsupporting, as it should be. Even with the increases it is very doubtful if State housing finance breaks even Surely Mr Palmer does not expect the taxpayers to house him a>t their expense? My home is freehold and, like many others. I did not get it that way by sitting on my back, side. I now have the doubtful honour of being taxed to support others less willing to work and save. New Zealand is a wonderful countrv, full of opportunity. and we should consider ourselves very lucky to live here. Notices throughout Hong Kong simply read: “Work or die.” —Yours, etc. THANKFUL KIWI. June 15. 1962.
