FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A ridge of high pressure lies over northern New Zealand. An extremely deep depression far to the south of the country is moving south-east. Forecast:— Canterbury.—North to north-west winds: mainly cloudy; rain in the Alps; a change to fresh southwesterlies with colder, showery weather is likely to spread as far north as Christchurch later. Nelson.—Fresh to strong westerlies outside Tasman Bay, otherwise moderate variable winds; cloudy; some rain later; moderate temperatures. Marlborough.—Strong north-west winds about the Sounds, fresh inland; cloudy; occasional rain later; moderate temperatures. Buller and Westland.—Moderate to fresh northerlies tending west to south-west in the south later; overcast, ram probably heavy at times; moderate temperatures. Outlook.—All districts: cloudy and showery in most places.
