SAFE BLOWN IN SHOP

Thieves Active At Week-End

A small safe in the premises of W. U. Baker and Sons, Ltd., cycle manufacturers and importers, 219-221 Cashel street, was blown open between Friday night and yesterday afternoon, and about £lO was stolen. Entry wa s gained through a skylight. Between 10,000 and 15.000 cigarettes were stolen from the shop of Thomas Burrell, hairdresser and tobacconist, in the same building. The Rose Marie Milk Bar, next door, was also entered but it was not known last evening if anything had been stolen.

The depot of Masons Dry Cleaners at 380 C Riccarton road, near Church corner, was entered on either Friday or Saturday night, but it is not known if anything was stolen. The shop of Guthrie Bowron and Company. Ltd., paint merchants, at 380 A Riccarton road, was also broken into but nothing was taken. Entry to both premises was gained by breaking a rear window. An attempt was made to enter the shop of Gilmore's Continental Delicatessen, in the same building, by breaking a window, but the thieves were thwarted by a grill.
