“NO INQUIRY NEEDED”
Shirt-making Industry
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 14. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton) is not prepared to conduct an inquiry into the allocation of raw materials to shirt factories or into the costs of shirt manufacture.
He gave this .answer in Parliament today in reply to a question by Mr S. A. Whitehead (Opposition Nelson). who had drawn his attention to the fact that a Nelson shirt factory had been compelled to reduce its staff from 29 to two. “I am aware that a shirt factory in Nelson is finding it very hard to obtain work,” Mr Shelton said. “This factory operates on a ‘cut, make and trim’ basis, and its former employer, who is also largely engaged in this type of work, has evidently decided not to proceed with further assignments.” Mr Shelton said there was no question of the factory being refused supplies of materials, so there was no need for an inquiry.
