INJURED DOG RESCUED
Man’s Climb Down Cliff
(N.Z. Press Association)
HAMILTON. June 15.
A Whakamaru garage proprietor, John Sherley, climbed down a 120 ft cliff above the Waikato river in a nerveracking attempt to rescue his injured pet dog. Bonny. Bonny, a bull terrier, lay whimpering in a small clump of ti-tree half-way down the cliff during the hour-long rescue.
Her master, lowered on a rope by fellow rescuers, struggled desperately with the Waikato far below.
Bonny had apparently been indulging in her favour, ite sport, chasing rabbits, when she plunged over the cliff face. Only the ti-tree saved her.
During the precarious rescue, Rex Sherley, a son of Mr Sherley talked to Bonny in an attempt to comfort her. Dry-mouthed and with beads of perspiration rolling off his forehead, Mr Sherley continued down the cliff.
An hour after being lowered, Mr Sherley was at the top again, clutching the shivering dog.
