English Jockey At Riccarton

A former English lightweight jockey is now employed by the Riccarton owner-trainer. Mr L. W Timperley. He is 23-year-pld R. B. Swindlehurst, who arrived at Auckland on the Oronsay on Thursday. He was riding work at Riccarton yesterday morning.

Swindlehurst, who comes from Blackburn. Lancashire, has ridden a number of winners in England He has no: won a major handicap on any of the principal English courses, but has ridden successfully at both Asco: and Newmarket It was at Ascot on the Duchess of Norfolk's Middle Watch that he had his first winning ride. That was his tenth ride in a race. Swindlehurst. who still goes to scale at about 7-0. served the first four years of his five-year apprenticeship at the Sussex stable of W Smythe, who was private trainer to the Duke of Norfolk. In the final year of his apprenticeship he was attached to J Meacock's stables, in Hampshire. Swindlehurst, who has been out of his time for about a vear. was last employed bv P T. Dawson, who trains at Kmgswrxxi. Surrey with a modern~kitchen and facilities.
