HAAST PASS ROAD
“Lot Of Money Not Spent”
A lot of money voted for the Haast Pass road was not being spent, he understood, said Mr E. Millton at last evening's meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce council.
Mr Million said he had recently made a trip to the Paringa area, and was informed by Federated Farmers on the West Coast that the money was “just not being spent.” "I wonder if we could do something about it here, and if we could start something,” said Mr Million. "This road is one of the main tourist attractions of the South Island coming up.” Mr R. C. Neville said that the chamber should write to the Commissioner of Works, asking him to give an indication of how the money allocated for the road was spent. The year's grant had been made in April, however, and as only two months had passed, it might be a little early to say. “It >s public information, and we would not be treading on anyone's toes.” said Mr Neville. “I am sure the commissioner would be pleased to give the information.”
Money not spent on the road within the year’s allocation could not be carried forward to next year, but was “completely forfeited.” said Mr Neville, in reply to a question.
It was decided to act as Mr Neville suggested
Uranium Stockpile. Enough uranium to last the Atomic Energy Authority a whole decade was now piling up in Britain because of contracts with mining concerns in Canada, Australia, and South Africa, the "Guardian” science correspondent reported.— (London, June 7.)
