MOORHOUSE AV. STRIP
Criticism By Chamber
"Those cf us who have looked at the median strip in Moorhouse avenue think it is far too wide, and we are not very happy about it.” said Mr P. M. Mac Shane, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Ccmmerce. when its council i met last evening. I “It is a matter of .traffic engineering,” .said Mr R. C. Neville. "But to us people who merely use the streets it seems ridiculcus to widen the street and then take away all that is gained by installing the median strip.” \
A transoort committee report before the meeting recommended that . the chamber support the proposal that the median strip be not more than 4ft wide, and that gaps te provided at mid-sec-tion between intersecting streets. “Protest Too Late?”
“As one who frequently passes along M -orhouse avenue to Lancaster Park. I note that the median strip is already down.” said Mr B. J. Drake. “What is the use of protesting now that it should be only 4ft wide?” Mr Mac Shane: Mr Drake, it would not be the first time a street has been put doivn, and torn up. To a question. Mr Neville said that Moorhouse avenue was a State highway for its whole length. As such, the Ministry of Works met the cost of works, but the road was under the control of the City Council. Mr R. H. Clark said he supported the idea of midsection gaps between streets This would enable U-turns to be made, which at the moment could only be done at intersections —“just the very worst place for them,” he said.
The transport committee’s recommendation to support a 4ft median strip, with midsection gaps, was adopted.
