VEGETABLE EXPORTS
More Sought To Australia (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 7. The Vegetable and Produce Growers’ Federation believes that New Zealand’s vegetable exports to Australia should be increased. A remit asking that the attention of the Government be drawn to the plant quarantine and other conditions imposed by the Australian Government was passed unanimously by the ■ annual conference of the federation today. It referred to the unfavourable balance of trade against New Zealand smd asked that efforts be continued to increase exports to Australia. Moving the remit. Mr M G. Browne. Katikati, said there always seemed to be some sort of barrier against exporting vegetable produce to Australia. Because New Zealand was such a good customer it was reasonable she should expect every opportunity to trade. The director of the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture (Mr A. M. W. Greig) said New Zealand had great difficulty in getting clearly from the Australian authorities what their plant quarantine regulations were in advance.
This had made the position difficult but the head of the Quarantine Division in Australia was coming to New Zealand soon. Mr Greig suggested that the federation should ask to take part in the discussions so that it would know the quarantine conditions well in advance.
