RECRUITING TEACHERS

The Minister could rely on the full suonort of the New Zealand Educational Institute in his efforts to recruit at least 2500 teachers, Mr W. R. Familton. president of the institute, told the Wellington branch tonight “We accept Mr Tennent’s reference to putting students in tents if necessary as oroof of his desire to find the teachers so urgently needed. This number is the minimum necessary to achieve the institute's fundamental objectives of smaller classes and better teaching,” he said.
Last year, the Minister's objective of 2000 training college students was not reached.
Although the Commission on Education had recom- • mended qualification allowances as an urgent measure twm years ago. the Governi ment had done nothing about it. -
