AMENITIES FOR YOUTH
Government Subsidies (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 5. New schemes to curb “anti-social" behaviour in some young people were announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs iMr Gotz) today. The schemes are: Government subsidy of halls and other amenities for young people; and the appointment of youth recreation officers in each of the four main centres. Mr Gotz said the subsidy scheme gave effect to his announcement that part o' the lottery profits would gc towards solving youth prob lenxs. Details of the schemes' application were still being worked out. He said it was the Government's declared intention to ensure that the resources of home, church, school. local authorities and youth organisations were fully employed in curbing these anti-social tendencies. "The Government fully believes that youth problems are best dealt with on the spot. . “Subsidies for halls and amenities and the appointing of youth recreation officers are intended to help local organisations to collaborate in dealing with these problems as seems best for their districts." the Minister said. He assured local authorities and organisations which had already applied for subsidies that their claims would be carefully considered when the scheme was formulated. Mr Gotz said the primary task of youth recreation officers would be to collaborate with local authorities and groups in planning and inaugurating schemes for training youth leaders. Other duties would include coordinating youth activities. This would ensure that available experience and resources were used to the best advantage advising and assisting youth groups and encouraging the formation of new; clubs.
