SENTENCED TO GAOL TERM

A man who. last week, was fined £6O and placed on probation for one year on a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge, pleaded guilty before Mr G. J. Donne. S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court at Rotorua on a similar charge involving the same girl. This time. Upoko Kautai. aged 32. married, a Rarotongan. was sent to prison for 18 months. Detective Senior-Sergeant W. T. Cook said the police received a complaint from the girl that Kautai had had intercourse with her on three successive nights at the end of May Kautai admitted sleeping with the- girl on the nights mentioned by her. but claimed that intercourse took place only on the night of May 31. The district probation officer. Mr H. R. Hieford. said he Bad given Kautai a written instruction not to associate with the girl. Kautai had signed the instruction The Magistrate said he had told Kautai last week that only in special cases was an offender not sent to gaol on such a charge

"I fined you and placed you on probation, but two days later you offend again with the same girl. You have paid scant attention to me and none whatever to the probation officer.” said the Magistrate.
