PROMISING TRIAL

Tombob Fit For Waimate "The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, May 22. Tombob, one of the most promising hack sprinters at Wingatui, showed that he was in the right order to contest the Waimate County Publicans’ Handicap, when he recorded a most attractive trial this morning. Ridden by R. A. Low the Kurdistan gelding ran the first two furlongs in 27sec and completed five furlongs in lmin 8 2-ssec. Overhead conditions were ideal, but the track was heavy and against fast times. The work was held on the course proper .with the trestles 40 feet out. Tombob finished fifth on the opening day of the Riverton meeting and improved to third to Athenree One and Filwood m the President’s Handicap on the last day. He appears to have thrived since then and is one of the form condidates for the hack sprint on Saturday. Desert Chief has done well in a short let-up and should be back to his best for the Dunedin meeting. He was given an easy gallop in lmin Ifisec, coming home the last three furlongs in 41sec. First Mink (3. E. Kennedy) and Red Fox (R. J. Skelton) worked well over half a mile in 53 4-ssec, the opening furlong in 12 4-ssec. With two seconds in his three races to date, First Mink appears a good prospect for the Trial Plate at Waimate, but he will have to overcome the outside barrier stall in a capacity field. Innuendo (J. Didham) relished the conditions when working alongside Radiant Howe (J. D. Pankhurst) in 54 2 ssec. the last three furlongs in 4! 2-ssec. Royal News (R. A. Low) and Captain Hunt <R. N. Marsh) worked well over seven furlongs in lmin 38 4-ssec, the last half-mile m 55 l-ssee and the final three furlongs in 41 4-ssec. Both horses are well forward for their Waimate engagements. Royal News is one of the early favourites for the Waitangi Champion Hack Handicap after his close third at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting at his last start. Captain Hunt ran two good races at Riverton and is a light-weight prospect for the Waimate Cup. Believe Me (Me Turnbull) was four lengths too good for his stablemate Begorrah <B. E. Kennedy) over tthe same ground in lmin 39 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 44 4-ssec.
