GAS EFFECT ON COAL
Mr Shand To Investigate (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 22. The impact which natural gas from Taranaki could make on the New' Zealand coal industry will be studied by the Minister of Mines (Mr Snand) in Britain, France, and Holland. “I am very interested in the problems which natural gas is likely to create for the coal industry,” he said in Auckland tonight before leaving by air for Geneva to attend a conference of the International Labour Organisation. “I intend to visit the Laq gas fields in the south of France and to discuss with people there and in London. Paris, and Holland the steps necessary to prepare for the problems likely to arise. "I shall also discuss administrative problems connected w'ith the co-ordination of different forms of power.” Mr Shand will make these investigations before attending the 1.L.0. conference, which will end on June 22. He will return to New Zealand immediately afterwards.
