CYCLING P. Wood’s Record In Bays Race

Conditions were ideal for the local cycling clubs’ races on Saturday. On some Of the stretches of the Avon club's course around the bays there was a slight head wind, ! which steadied the riders a little. But it was not strong eongh to prevent P. Wood 'establishing a record for the' ! race. B. Mugford rode a well judged race to be the first man home in the Bays race, of 40 miles. Mugford rode away from his co-marker G. Smith and finished more than five minqtes ahead of him. Smith, who was fourth also rode well. C. Farrant a junior, who started riding in open company only this season, did well to take second place. Farrant gave Mugford five minutes start and although he strove hard to reduce the handicap he failed to catch Mugford by about two minutes R. Kennedy rode a good race for third. Little separated P. Wood and D Wood the two scratch riders but over the concluding stages P Wood wag the stronger. He won by 47 seconds. His • time of Ihr 50min 30sec was a record for the course. Results:—B. Wood (scr), 1:50:30. Papanui Club In tlie Papanui club’s championships from Papanui to Woodend and return, the senior title went to W. Thorpe and the junior to R E. Bush. The championships were run as time trials with each rider going away at two-minute intervals. On the return journey R. Mann rode well and his time was good enough to give him second place R. E. Bush had a clear cut win of 3 minutes 25 seconds over C. Gane. Bush rode an exceptionally good trial, which compared favourably with those of the seniors. Held in conjunction with the championships was a combined sealed handicap and this was won by W. Straight with R. Connelly second. Results were: — Senior championship: W. Thorpe 1, R. Mann 2. B. Mairehau Novice Club Members of the Mairehau novice club competed in four and a-half mile championship time trials on Saturday morn-
