“Gratifying Result” Of Poliomyelitis Campaign
Almost 74.000 children in the Christchurch health district, estimated as about 931 per cent, of those eligible, received their first dose of oral poliomyelitis vaccine during the Health Department’s immunisation campaign The campaign ended on Thursdav As far as could be told, the percentage of eligible pre. school children brought for immunisation was about the same as the percentage of schoolchildren immunised said the district medical officer of health <Dr. L. Those wfio had been missed in the campaign would be given their first dose when the others received their second dose, he added. The second round of clinics would be held between May 28 and June 8 "The result of the campaign so far has been very gratifying indeed." said Dr Jepson "I think we can sav we have achieved our objective of producing the beginning of immunity against poliomyelitis in the child population of this district. The wonderful co-ooeration we have had from parents Plunket Society members, dental nurses, and our own staff was essential to this happy outcome We look forward confidently to as great a response when we come to
complete the immunisation in a few weeks.”
Appointment cards for .a second dose had been issued in respect of all children who had received the vaccine. but as a reminder the dates of clinics would be fully advertised. Dr Jepson added The figures for the round of immunisations finished this week were: pre-school 19.512; primary school 39.379: post, primary school 15.035: total 73.926. Only the Templeton Hospital and Training School remains to be visited.
