Riccarton Trials For Monday

The Hastings jockey. J. T. Anderson, will ride Auriette in the Great Easier Handicap on Mondav.

Auriette, one of the early favourites for the first leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club's double, looked well when her trainer, J. A. McFarlane, exercised her at Riccarton yesterday.

Anderson rode Auriette in her latest race, when she ran third behind Almaza and Corador over furlongs at Hastings on April 7. Anderson will also ride Auriette's stablemate and half-brother. Le Plus, if he runs in the Champagne Stakes on Monday. Le Plus, a smallish but neat Oman colt, won against the two-year-olds at Hastings on April 7.

Hornpipe. the Warstep Stakes favourite, exercised on the sand at Riccarton yesterday. She has won her last two races impressively and could improve the good record of Mr J. G Alexander's horses at Riccarton. Mr Alexander won the Warstep Stakes with Juventas in 1957. and his hcuses have also won all the other important races at Riccarton at one time or another since then.

The Australian apprentice. A. Trevena. has been engaged to ride the Waimate-trained Natlin in the Warstgp Stakes Trevena will also ride Abou Ben Adhem. one of two runners for J. L. Barr's stable, in'

the Great Easter Handicap. Abou Ben Adhem invariably races well fresh, and sprinted very keenly at Riccarton on Thursday, running the fastest half-mile of the morning. Top-Weight Fit The Great Autumn Handicap top-weight. Compensate, looked well and worked keenly for his race rider. F. H. Skelton, on the sand at Riccarton yesterday.

Compensate is one of four horses sent north by R. W Bromby. who has been training at Waikouaiti. but moved to Oamaru on Thursday. Compensate has 8-9 in the Great Autumn, and if he runs up to his form, he is weighted

with a great chance of running into one of the places. The last time he raced over a mile and a half was on December 26 when he was fourth with 8-11 in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Ellerslie. He was galloped on in that race, and although able to race twice more at the Auckland Cup meeting—he started in the cup—he had to be put aside for a time soon afterwards. He joined Bromby’s stable before he resumed racing at the Oamaru meeting last month. Studio, another Great Autumn Handicap candidate, was given three runs* over the two pony hurdles at Riccarton yesterday. He was ridden by K. Qugyle. Studio has a solid record at a mile and a half and a drying track has brightened his chance in the Great Autumn. Safe Harbour will probably run in the Great Autumn Handicap if there is no more rain. She will be ridden by M. J. Skelton.
