TENNIS N.Z. Players Stand In Sangster’s Way

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 19. Two of New Zealand’s Davis Cup team, R. K. Hawkes, of Wellington, and I. S. Crookenden, of Waikato, bar the way of the United Kingdom’s joint No. 1 player, M. J. Sangster, from reaching the tinal of the British hard court tennis championships which begin at Bournemouth on Monday.

Sangster has been seeded second to the Wimbledon champion, R. Laver (Australia), and meets the New Zealanders early in the championship. His opening match is against the 21 • year - old Hawkes, before he tackles his first “seed,” Crookenden.

Laver, beaten in last year's final by his . compatriot, R. Emerson, faces less opposition this time. He begins with a Centre Court match against the British Davis Cup captain. J. Barrett, and. in his half of the draw, has other seeded players, A. Mills and J. A. Pickard (Britain) and fellow Australian, W. Jacques. Tough Opponent

Mills, however, may find himself having to figh<t hard to get through to a fourth round meeting with Laver, for his likely previous opponent is the New Zealand international player, J. R. McDonald.

The British players. R Wilson, still under suspension. and W. A. Knight, who has been given permission to play abroad, are notable absentees from the championship. The women’s section has Britain's Miss Angela Mortimer, seeded one in defence of the women’s singles title.

(N Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) SUTTON (Surrey). April 19. The New Zealander, J. R. McDonald entered the sem’-finals of the Sutton hard court tennis tournament today. He beat G. Sanders (Germany). 6-4, 6-2. in the third round, and E Bluett (Britain). 6-2. 6-1, in the quarter-finals.

McDonald was joined by the Australian. R. N. Howe, who beat M. P. Hann (Britain), 6-4. 6-4.

TWO EASY WINS FOR R. LAVER

Ferguson Beaten In Third Round (N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) LONDON. April 19 The Wimbledon champion. R Laver (Australia) coasted through two matches today to reach the men's singles semifinals in a hard court tennis tournament at Chingford Essex. Laver, making his first appearance in England since last July beat D Hales (Britain). 6-3. 6-2 and P. Apev (Chile) 6-2..6-3 In a third round match, W Bowrey (Australia) beat J Ferguson (New Zealand), 9-7. 6-1 In the mixed doubles, first round. B. Geraghty (Australia: and Miss V. Fladgate (New Zealand) beat A. Chapman and Miss J. Jackson (Britain). 6-0 6-1.
