The "Daily Mirror sports writer Peter Wilson, under the headline "Come off it—let Herb step down quietly.” said toda\ that the Australian miler H. j Elliott owed nothing to athletics and had announced his retirement with dignity and decision
Wilson said: ’’Why on earth not allow him to descend from his pedestal without further fuss or ado? "But ob. no. That bearded, wizened little coach of his. Percy Cerutty. is behaving like a somewhat broken-down Svengali whose trilby has been purloined by some unidentified bandits"
