TAXATION LEVEL
Labour Party Criticism (N.Z. Press Association) * . AUCKLAND, April 20. Taxpayers are paying more to the Government now than before the last election, the president of the Labour Party (Dr. A. M. Finlay) said in Auckland today He told reporters: “I want to suggest a title for Mr Lake’s forthcoming Budget: ‘How to increase taxes while promising reductions.’ “The present lift in airways dues is the most recent of many increases—rail fares, postal charges, electricity rates and State house rentals (soon to rise further) —which are tax increases in disguise and all the worse for being sectional in operation. “For a year the total additional increase is over £7 million and still' rising—not bad for a Government that attained office largely on a promise to reduce expenditure and taxation.”
