‘RETREATING FROM SNELL’
Coach Accuses Elliott (N.Z J>. A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON. April 18. The radio-telephone conversation, in which the Australian miler, H. J. Elliott, was accused by his coach, P. Cerutty, of “retreating from Snell,” was reported in the “Daily Mail,” which arranged the call today. The conversation, according to the newspaper, was: Elliott: Did I get you out of bed. Pence? Cerutty: Of course, it’s two in the morning. When are you coming home? Elliott: Not until next year. You remember the talk you Once gave to Don McMillan (farmer Australian mile champion) advising him to think of his exams before running? Well, I am now in the same position. Cerutty: But your Australian firm has said they are agreeable to your staying another year at Cambridge. Elliott: My Cambridge college, Jesus, has not said anything. I can hardly ask for a place to be left open for me another year. Running Away Cerutty: What worries me, Herb, # that it seems you are running away from Peter Snell. Elliott: Surely you know better than that, Perce. Cerutty: Then it’s those women around your neck who have persuaded you against running. Elliott: No, I did not tell my wife or mother until I had made up my mind. Cerutty: If I can get £lOOO to pay your family's expenses will you come? Elliott: Money has nothing to do with my decision. Cerutty: I will never give up the idea of your making a come-back. Indeed, I might fly over to England to convince you.
