PLUNKET BALL AT CHEVIOT
Hall Decorated As Witches’ Cave Because it was “Friday the Thirteenth” when the Cheviot sub-branch of the Plunket Society held its recent ball, superstition was challenged and the Cheviot Memorial Hall was decorated to represent a witches’ cave Several hundred guests attended.
Replicas of black cats and witches on broomsticks were set round the walls of the hall and across the stage. Blue and black streamers across the ceiling muted the lighting and gave the illusion of a cave roof. A witches’ cauldron and a bubbling brew might have added more realism to the scene, but New Zealand’s fire safety regulations and licensing laws were observed
Members of the ball committee included the following:—Mesdames J. Lee (secretary), B. Haywood. D Morrison, A. Hyde, D. Saunders. R. Winskill. R. Robertson. I. Smith, H. Grigg. N. Maxwell. A. Lucy, A. de Lambert. R. Sloss. C. Souter. G. Luttrell, G. Cottom. T. Conway, I. Wilkinson, J Davie. J. Strong, K. Fitzpatrick and B. Cooper.
