HARD COURT TOURNEYS
Ferguson And McDonald Win (N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CHINGFORD (Essex), Apl. 17. A New Zealander. J. Ferguson, won his second round match in the men’s singles at the Connaught Club’s hard court tournament today, beating a British opponent, J. Petchey. 8-6. 6-3. In the women’s singles, first round. Miss J. Glenie (New Zealand) lost, 6-4, 6-4, to a British player, Mrs B. Shenton. Another New Zealander. Miss V. Fladgate, was eliminated in the second . round by Miss Christine Truman (Britain). However. Miss Glenie and Miss Fladgate combined in the women's doubles first round to beat Mrs P. Moys and Miss R. Evans (Britain). 7-5, 6-2. In the Sutton (Surrey) hard court tournament, J. McDonald (New Zealand) beat J. Olney (England), 6-8, 6-1, 6-1, in a first-round match. Touring Team In U.K. (N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. April 17. The New Zealand touring tennis team arrived at London airport last night. Its first major meeting will be the British hard court championships at Bournemouth. On May 4. the men begin their Davis Cup match against Denmark.
