Chess CANTERBURY CLUB
Upset In Senior Grade The chances of the leading players in the Canterbury Chess Club’s senior championship changed radically as a result of this week’s games. L. J. Walpole, who held a clear lead, lost to the present champion, G. V. Sumner, which not only gives Sumner renewed hope, but greatly improves the position of M. W. Taylor. Taylor maintained his unbeaten record with a win against A. S. Hollander. Walpole now has five points in a possible six. Taylor four out of tour, and Sumner three and ahalf out of five. The leading Intermediatejunior grade player, A. L. Wilkinson, did not complete any games, but N. M. Cooper improved his position to second by beating Miss A. WellardKing. Results were;— Senior.—J. A. Hunter 1, A. S. Hollander 0; Sumner 1, Walpole 0; Taylor 1, Hollander 0. Intermediate-Junior.—K. D. Smith 0, P. Bishop 1; Smith 1, B. B. Miles 0; Cooper 1, Miss Wellard-King 0; Bishop 1, B. Andersen 1; D. K. Watson 1, Miles 0; Miss Wellard-King 1, M. Johnson 0; R. Koutstaal 0, Johnson 1.
