Rugby ALL BLACK TRIALS
M.W. Allen Not Available The University and Canterbury prop, M. W. Allen, wi 1 not be available for the All Black trials at Timaru on May 2, for which he has been nominated. Allen, who contracted a spinal infection while touring with the Universities Rugby team in California last month, will not resume playing until after the trials. The convener of the New Zealand selection panel (Mr N. J. McPhail) said yesterday that it was possible players other than those nominated by the various unions would be cauea upon to take part in the trials. The Otago nominations are: Forwards, J. C. Lindsay, M. C. Meikle, K. Nelson, J. G. Flannery, and G. McLennan; backs, G. H. Smith, W. A. Davies, and I. S. T. Smith. Mid-Canterbury Four players have been nominated by the Mid-Canterbuiy Rugby Union, two from toe Allenton dub. They are: J. D. Sampson (Allenton) and A. Farrell (Hinds), five-eighths; R. G. Fraser (Allenton), side row, and P. F. Prendergast (Celtic), prop.
Application For North-South
(NJJ. Press Association) ROTORUA, April 18. Application will be made by toe Bay of Plenty Rugby Union to have next year’s North island v. South Island Rugby match played at Rotorua. It could fit in with the extensive sports events sheduled for toe Rotorua city celebration.
Catchpole Is Confident (NJ!. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. April 18. K. Catchpole, the Australian Rugby Union captain, is confident he will, be fit to play in the two tests against toe Ail Blacks. His injured thigh muscle has responded well to treatment. "I may be able to resume training in a week’s time,” Catchpole said today. He will probably miss the New South Wales-AU Blacks match on May 19, but should be right for the first tert in Brisbane on May 16.
