Supporter Incensed By Change To “Soccer”

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 18. Approval by the New Zealand Football Association council of the word “soccer" in lieu of “Association Football” has upset at least one soccer supporter in New Zealand. At a meeting the council received a letter from Mr L. E. Fink, who said he was an “ex-player, ex-coach, ex-president Taranaki Football Association.” Mr Fink wrote:— “Is it any wonder that the game can make no progress in this country when it is saddled with an executive

that hasn't the sense to insist on the game being known by its correct name: viz, Association Football? “I for one will give no farther support, financially or otherwise, until this is reversed.” He signed himself as “Disgustedly. L. E. Fink.” The envelope in which the letter came was addressed to the secretary of the New Zealand Football Association, but in one corner Mr Fink had written: “Post Office, please note, these are the people who prefer to be known as the ‘soccer crowd.’ ” The letter was received with laughter.
