STOWAWAY CHINESE
Reprieve From Deportation (NJt. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, April 18. The Australian Immigration Minister (Mr A. Downer) has granted a reprieve to five Chinese stowaways believed to have been on the point of immediate deportation to China, it was learned yesterday. They are being held in immigration custody pending talks with the Nationalist Chinese Ambassador, Dr. Chen Chih-mai. Last week a market gardener, Willie Wong, who also landed in Australia as a stowaway, was deported to China, an action which resulted in a storm of protests being received by the Federal Government. Nationalist China has agreed to take the Chinese deported from Australia on condition that they have been legally convicted and are being legally deported.
