ADDINGTON MARKET Good Calves Sell Well; Lambs Easier

Good-quality store calves were about on a par with last week’s values at Addington Market yesterday, although some of the plainer sorts did not meet as strong a sale. Top price for steer calves was £22 3s 6d. Adult cattle were generally easier by 20s to 30s a head.

In a smaller store sheep offering wethers sold strongly at last week’s good prices, but the inquiry for lambs, other than the best, was not as strong, and most classes of lambs were Is to Is 6d a head easier. Small offerings of ewes met only a moderate inquiry. There will be no sale next week, and the next store sheep and store cattle sale will be held on Wednesday, May 2.

STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry showed a further drop in numbers and smaller galleries followed the sales. While there was a good demand for wethers, there was less buying power for other sorts and only the best met any competition. Quality over all was not as good. The entry totalled 8707 head compared with 10.831 last week, and included 5051 store lambs (6361 last week). 824 two-tooth ewes (829) 8628 older ewes (1871) and 1970 wethers (1770). A smaller gallery followed the lamb sale and there was less buying power, with competition being shown only on the forward condition sorts. Generally, the wether lamb market could be quoted Is to Is fid a head easier, although odd pens made about late rates. STORE CATTLE Although the store cattle entry of 1106 head was well below the i 486 yarded last week, the drop wa* in adult cattle of which only. 280 were Offered compared with 670 last week. Calves increased slightly to 826 head compered with 796 last week.

Generally the calf sale was quite sound. The offering showed a bigger variation in quality but there were some well-known station lines of top quality forward.

The sale opened on a strong note with a large gallery following the market and bidding well, but as the sale progressed, and more of the plainer calves were offered, it tended to weaken by about 20s a head on all but the best. Later, however, when better calves were offered, competition Improved and the market took on a stronger note, with most classes fully up to late rates, and the best showing a slight advance. This was sustained until the end and there were quite a number of unsatisfied buyers. Best Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross steer calves ranged from £l7 3s fid to £2O 18s fid, with an odd sale to £22 3s fid, good made £l3 8s fid to £l6 18s 6d. average £ll 18s 6d to £l3 Is, and small and Inferior £7 13s 6d to £ll 3s Bd. ADULT CATTLE Adult store cattle generally met a weaker sale. There was less inquiry from a smaller gallery, the main demand at present being for calves, and most values for graziers' cattle could be quoted easier by 20s to 30s a head. Boner types and light condition cattle reflected the drop in the export schedule. The best of the two and a-half-year-old steers made to £32 18s 6d, which was paid for Aberdeen Angus cross from the Glens of Tekoa Estate (Culverden), and average good ranged from £2O 13s fid to £29 13s fid.
