CITY RATE PAYMENTS

Business Area “Best Payers”

The central business community contains the best payers of rates to the City Council. Ratepayers in the new districts added to the city a few years ago; such as North and West Papanui, Burwood, Wainoni, Bexley and Hoon Hay, are the most dilatory.

These observations were made by the City Rate Collector (Mr A. A. Boot) in a report to the council last evening on the results of the balancing of 1961-62 rates. From a total levy of £1,866,066, £45,336, or 2.43 per eent., was outstanding at the end of he financial year, Mr Boot said. The valuation roil comprising the area bounded by Madras, St. Asaph, Durham streets and Oxford terrace, which was occupied chiefly by business premises, had a levy of £312,045 on 844 rateable assessments. The position for the district was that £311,822 was paid at the end of the year 90.9 per cent, of the levy and the £223 outstanding compriaed only four assessments.
