LOTTERY FUNDS MAY HELP AGED
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON. April 18 An assurance that when lottery funds were allocated the Government would give "the greatest possible measure of assistance” to Christchurch work for the a-'ed was given today by the Minister cf Internal Affairs (Mr Got?). During his visit to Christchurch yesterday, Mr Gotz heard requests from tiie Aged People's Welfare Council for assistance from the lottery fund. He also visited Langford House. Windsor House and the occupational therapy block. The Government would show the utmost sympathy towards the requests, he said, but he had also received applications from several of the constituent members of the council, including the St. John Ambulance, the Red Cross, and the Nurse Maude Association. It would be necessary to decide whether any grant should go to the central council or whether it should be dispersed among the constituent bodies. “AMhou’h I know that there will be funds allocated to help the aged, and that
Christchurch will get a share of these, no decision has been made on the distribution,” said Mr Gotz. “In the meantime I apolaud the way the people of Christchurch have got together to deal with this very difficult problem. “The chairman of the Aged People's Welfare Counc ; l (Dr H. R. Donald) has told me there are still a number of elderly people in need of aocommodation like Langford House and Windsor House The annual expenditure for such premises is very heavy, and the council still needr assistance to provide administrative and other expenses involved."
